I do appreciate a political candidate with a real sense of humor.

All humor aside... Mike Huckabee is scary. Really, really scary.

Agreed. He'd be great to invite to parties to liven things up; but he shouldn't be given the power of the Presidency.

You are so so right. The ad is funny, but him running this country wouldn't be.

Huckabee

Why? Because he is conservative? Or because he's Southern Baptist? (To all who agree with leftyviolist, too.)

Re: Huckabee

I find his policies quite scary. Keep in mind, thought, that I'm politically liberal.

He supports abolishing the IRS and the tax system. Instead, taxes would be based on consumption - in other words, purchases that we make. The idea is perhaps noble, but I think it's one of the most unpragmatic ideas I've heard come across in the primaries. How will schools be funded, for example? Will local governments be entirely responsible for funding local services like police and fire? How will his plan for a new tax system ensure that community A receives an equal share of tax profits from community B? Huckabee has not addressed any of the these questions, so I question the validity of his position.

I completely disagree with his stance on immigration. I think that there are huge issues underlying illegal immigration, and I don't think his platform addressed these underlying problems. Furthermore, strengthening a wall/security/cameras along our southern border does not address immigrants from Asia, Eastern Europe and Africa who have simply overstayed their Visas - and there are lots of those people.

He believes in allowing the private sector to solve the health care crisis in this country. While the private sector could do a lot to reduce costs, I don't think his plan is the way to go. I personally think that one of the biggest problems is the way the health insurance industry works. I honestly don't think that the health insurance industry will self-regulate. Huckabee does support preventative health care measures, and that is a positive. However, Huckabee's assertion that the private sector will take care of making health care affordable is also thin on details.

Huckabee does support controlling government spending, and that is a reform I can get behind. However, it seems like most candidates are supporting this measure, so in my mind it does not make Huckabee stand out.

In terms of social issues, I am diametrically opposed to Huckabee's opinions. I support gay marriage and the right for a woman to decide what her reproductive choices are, so obviously, Huckabee is not a candidate for me.

Hope that helps.

By the way, a nice resource to help you pick the best candidate for you based on the issues is:

http://www.myelectiondecision.org

You vote for the issues you support without knowing who the candidate is.

Re: website

Interesting, I'll have to create an account and try that soon. Thanks for the link! :) As for Huckabee, I obviously don't agree with everything he advocates, but I tend to like his style. Our system of checks and balances ensures he can't do anything too wacky, and frankly, I like someone who thinks outside the box and might try to shake Washington up a little. And I tend to be socially conservative on social issues, so I think I would usually be OK with his stances. Newsweek had an interesting article on him recently, talking about some of his potential pros and cons. I like the fact that he isn't a traditional "Tax Cuts Automatically Good" Republican and that he actually thinks racism and poverty are still issues that needs to be addressed in a meaningful way. Anyway, I am still interested in John McCain and Barack Obama, so I am not committed to anyone yet, but besides McCain, Huckabee is definitely the most appealing Republican candidate so far in my eyes.
