Dramatis Personae

While I love LJ overall and think it's great as a tool, I must admit that I am sometimes irritated by how easy it is to misinterpret things.  It is not my intention to ever be offensive, unless I am clearly mocking someone like George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, etc.  I am amazed by how many times I have been chastized on here for things that I would never be accused of in person.  The fact is that it's sometimes hard to "read expressions" on LJ, whether it be sarcasm, humor, or just good-hearted poking fun.  I guess I would just caution people not to jump on something and take it too negatively, especially if you've been reading my journal for a while.  Take it in context, please.

I suppose one thing I've learned over the years online is to keep my own proverbial trap shut when it comes to other people's blogs.  For instance, a person on my flist recently reprinted an article from her neighborhood newsletter and was critiquing it.  While I agree with her in that it probably wasn't an entirely appropriate forum for a religious-biased article, she was basically mocking her neighbors' views as being stupid.  This didn't exactly thrill me because I tend to agree with the sentiments of the article, thereby implying I am stupid!  But you know what?  I did not feel the need to leave a comment; I didn't "get into it" with her, it's totally not worth it.  I know she's got a good heart and that she was expressing something she feels strongly about, but not in a malicious way.  I don't know her that well, but I have absolutely no reason to believe she was attempting to be insensitive or offensive.  She's just expressing herself in her own way in her own journal, just as I do.  So, I try to let these things "roll off" and understand it in the context of the online realm.  This is blogging, not real life, and while I try to be true to myself and write well here and on other journals, I can't let myself get too worked up over this stuff.  I've done it in the past and it's so not worth the stress and effort.  I suppose it's a sign of my improved mental well-being that I don't take it to heart as much, but I did still want to say something about this subject.  Hopefully, this comes across well and you get to know the "real me" a little better as a result! :)

omg! teh draaaamaaaazzz!! lollollol

;) *hugs* I'm always suspicious of people who, on-line, fly off the bat in a second or less. On a forum I frequent, I am very careful about how I word my posts, and careful about what I say. That policy has served me well.

OMGWTFBBQ

Hee, hee! Internet "chatter" can be a bit bizarre. Honestly, I'm not upset. I want people to express themselves on here, I appreciate comments. I just want folks to keep what they know of me in mind when they do so, hopefully they will not be inclined to think I am bigoted or whatever. I'm sure everyone on here wants that, when it comes down to it. I've been burned enough times myself that I have learned to give people the benefit of the doubt online. I solemnly promise to avoid "trolling" and "flaming" as much as I can!

Personally

The irony of it all is that I really do enjoy political and/or religious debates. I don't usually take things personally and I am always interested in other viewpoints. The hard part of LJ (or any other online forum) is the lack of human interaction and the delay between responses. So, things can get misinterpreted and that is why I tend to avoid them now. But, if you want to discuss this stuff another way, I am happy to do so! You can e-mail me at mockingbird7 @ aim . com anytime. I'll get on AIM as "mockingbird7" for a while today, too. :)

I don't think you said anything wrong. And even if you did, it's your journal meant for your opinions. :)

I know exactly what you mean. Just the other day my friends were saying how irl they know exactly "how" I am saying something, by my tone or gestures or w/e. However, on AIM or something they never know how to read me. They say I come off curt, matter-of-fact, blunt. Luckily they know me, so I can only imagine what something would think if they DIDN'T know me.

Anyway, I like how you handled things here. Unfortunately, I tend to get wrapped in the drama. I think I will try to take a position more like yours from now on. ^_^

Handling

I'm glad I'm not the only one it happens to! I seem to do the online version of "foot in mouth" fairly often, as much as I try to avoid it. Hence the need for the "LJ Drama" icon! Anyway, glad I was able to share a different perspective on this seemingly pervasive problem. :)

I'm sorry, I cannot access your phone number because the backlight to my laptop screen burned out last evening, and you're not on IM.

I just wanted to let you know that I am pretty burned out after work and sorta want to stay in. But you can always call me about another time, OK?

Staying in

OK, that's cool. I was supposed to go to a clinic at the fencing club yesterday and skipped it because I wasn't feeling well, so I probably wouldn't have been up for a movie or anything else myself. We'll definitely have to get together soon, though! Good luck tomorrow, maybe we can hang out later this week. :)
