Epee Victory

Went down to Terre Haute this weekend to fence at Rose-Hulman's Tournament of Thorns.  Jim, Greg, and I drove down on Friday evening so we could take our time and not rush around in the morning.  We got together with living_in_books at Applebee's, I finally got to meet her in person!  We had a very nice conversation -- Jim was strangely fascinated with her job and kept peppering her with questions, she was very gracious and kindly answered them all.  We showed her some of my fencing equipment afterward, we got a couple funny pics of her with the gear.  Fun was had by all, I daresay.  Us three guys then left to check into the local Ramada, where Greg and I proceeded to use up all the available space to work on equipment until it was time for bed!  We got up on Sat morning and had a small breakfast, then went over to the Institute.  The most annoying part of the day was that the tourney announcement said epee was slated to start at 9 AM, but no one was there and the sign said the building was supposed to open at 10 AM!  A member of their fencing club finally came by a couple minutes before 9 AM (after we had been standing around for 10 minutes or so wondering what the heck was going on) to tell us someone would be by to open up the building "shortly."  We finally started fencing at 10 AM, so that was rather irritating.  After that, though, we had a pretty good time.  I fenced epee and, wonder of wonders, I was the man to beat after pools and ended up winning the darn thing!  So, I am pleased to say I now have my "E2007" in epee.  Who'da thunk it?  All three of us fenced foil and did well, but none of us earned a plaque in that event.  To finish the day, Greg fenced a little round-robin sabre since there weren't enough people for a formal event, then we had dinner at Pizza Hut to commemorate our good fortune.  I updated my website with some photos from the weekend, here's a sampling:

Good times!  In other good news, I officially started volunteering at the Ivy Tech library today.  I was originally going to start slow and just stay for an hour, but I got into it and ended up staying a half hour longer.  There's a book fair tomorrow, so I'm going to go in a little earlier and help with that, too.  I am hoping to ask Sharon (the library director) if she might be willing to serve as a reference in a couple weeks if things go smoothly.  I am also scheduled to work at Parkview all day on Wed and Thurs.  Hopefully, I can keep taking positive steps during this interim period!
