Blergh.  Not feeling so peppy this morning, especially due to yesterday's events.  I traded hours with Maureen, so I was working 12:30-9 PM instead of my usual 9 AM-5:30 PM.  I usually get the mail after lunch and I was busy with other stuff, so it finally dawned on me that if I wanted to get the mail in for the day, I needed to do it before 5 PM!  So, I was hurrying over to the admin building in the rain at about 4:50 PM.  When you get to the side entrance for Trinity Hall, there are a couple steps.  I had the hand cart for the mail with me, so I lifted it up in front of me to go up the steps.  Unfortunately, I tripped and fell on the cart!  Not only did I bash my shin, but I started bleeding.  A couple girls ran and got some paper towels, then I hobbled over to one of the chairs in the hallway.  Security eventually came along with a first aid kit and helped clean me up.  I was more pissed about the fact that I had gotten blood on my khaki pants than anything else!  They recommended I go over to Redimed and get checked out since I had gotten hurt on the clock, but I honestly thought I could "walk it off" and was embarrassed about the whole thing, so I demurred.  Eric, one of the security guys, told me to let him know if I changed my mind.  Like I said, this happened just before 5 PM.  About 8:15, I put on a third bandage and found it was still bleeding.  At that point, I said "screw it" and told my co-workers I was going to get checked out.  It took me a while to get on the road and then find the clinic, so I arrived about 9 PM.  The good news is that I got right in and that I didn't need stitches.  It's weird, it looks like a small hole (perfectly circular) right in the middle of my shin but I can't figure out what it was on the cart that punctured me!  There aren't any sharp angles or noticeable protrusions on the thing.  The most irritating aspect of this incident is that it is pretty much my fault because I've been meaning to get new dress shoes for several weeks and haven't made the time.  The soles are completely worn down and I've slipped in Trinity Hall before, so I figured I was a disaster waiting to happen!  *hums*  Anyway, the doc at Redimed used "sterile superglue" to seal the wound and gave me a tetanus shot, then sent me on my way.  With all the excitement, I had trouble falling asleep and then my aching leg caused me to wake up in the night.  I took another ibuprofen and was fine, but it means I'm dragging today.  Feeling a little sore and rather chagrined, but at least I've stopped bleeding!

Just a laundry tip: Carbona Stain Devils (little yellow bottles) carried at most supermarkets make one for blood and it works very well.

Sounds like an exciting evening!! Also sounds exactly like something I'd do >_< I hope your leg feels better soon! *hugs*

(Cold water before the blood dries will also work very well... AND, if you want ANY chance of getting it out, try to do so before you put them in the washing machine... otherwise it's NEVER coming out!)

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Why does this stuff always happen when you're in a hurry?

I find that Stain Stick works really well too. It's like a big glue stick for laundry, but it gets my husbands shirts clean (amazing since I can't even identify some of the stains to begin with). He's not exactly what I would call neat.

Feel better!

Wound care

Hey, a word of advice from an athletic trainer: beware of getting knot in your shin where the wound is at. Sometimes, you can bruise your bone and the blood in that area will calcify and cause a big lump. If it does, you can take a styrafoam cup, fill it half-way full of water, freeze it and then use it as an ice massage in that area to help break up that lump. It's not pain free, but it does the trick pretty well... sorry, had to put in my medical advice :-)

Re: Wound care

Thanks for the tip! It's still tender and it doesn't look fab, but I think it's doing OK and I don't seem to have a lump. Redimed told me to come back if things like that developed and so far it seems good, it definitely hurts less. My shoulder aches from the tetanous shot more than anything else at this point! Appreciate the words of wisdom, thanks for sharing. :)
