Anthropomorphizing

sharkynell recently posted about fishing, and it got me thinking along a strange tangent.  Surprise, huh?
  • Do fish ever go, "Damn, what the heck was that?!  I was hauled out of the water by my lip, then thrown back home.  Man, that freaking hurts..."
  • To giraffes, we're the ones with ridiculously short necks.
  • Would zebras consider a UPC barcode to be some kind of racial slur?
  • Penguins scoff at our conception of monogamy.
  • Hedgehogs are not hogs, nor do they live in hedges -- discuss.
  • Dogs think shaking hands is a very odd way to greet each other; they'd rather sniff each other's butts.
  • A centipede who tripped on a wet surface would have one heck of a liability claim.
  • Would a female sperm whale ever demand to be called an ovarian whale?  Or at least a spyrm whale?

Hee, hee! I ended with my favorite musing. :P The sad part is that once I started thinking about it, I was pondering different animals for a good half hour! Speaking of wasting time... oh, well! *LOL*

I am SUCH a teacher...

Etymology to the rescue!

hedge
O.E. hecg, ... The verb sense of "dodge, evade" is first recorded 1598; that of "insure oneself against loss," as in a bet, is from 1672. Hedgehog is c.1450 (replacing O.E. igl), the second element an allusion to its pig-like snout.

So, the "hedge" part probably comes from "dodge, evade" and the hog part - there you go. :D

Re: I am SUCH a teacher...

oh, this is kind of random, but the Old Eng. word is Igl. That's what they call it still in German (Igel, soundes like eagle).

Aaaand apparently I'm a bit premature on the "enter" button; methinks I should look at the screen before I do that. Thanks for the LAUGH, too.
