Perhaps I'm just arguing semantics here, but I'm always irritated when people make statements like, "You have to respect everybody!"  Excuse me, but I don't.  To me, there is a difference between simply human decency and respect.  You have to earn a person's respect; common courtesy should be expected unless some kind of provocation has been issued.  I guess I just feel like we're blurring terms when it's more important than ever to keep these things in mind.  While I expect a certain regard for my education and experience (and treat others accordingly), genuine respect is something that comes with time and effort.  Am I alone in thinking this way?

No, I agree. Respect is something that must be earned. I'd never thought about it that way before, but I agree entirely.

You're quite right. Respect is earned not given. (That's from Worf in Star Trek Next Generation... I am such a geek.)
Anyway Quite right. I agree with you.

I think you're right, but I'm curious as to what provoked this statement?

Provocation

I honestly don't remember now. It was swirling around in my head a while ago, and it popped into my head again last night as I was sitting at the computer. Just thought it was an interesting thread, so I typed it out!

Re: Provocation

I completely agree with you! I hear that far too often and it annoys me very much. So... hear hear!

As to why this came up... I remember you either posting something about it maybe a month ago... or perhaps it was over the phone that one time... but I certainly remember you mentioning this before.
